For those of you that thought Kayne West was the be all and end all of music:

  1. It was Daft Punk’s song, he just spoke over it.
  2. These guys are much cooler.

Functional Fitness (Part 1)

Monday, February 18th, 2008

The future of fitness is here. It’s been here for awhile actually, and it’s only now that magazines are starting to catch up. Functional fitness, means keeping your body in shape to do the things that you’re likely to do throughout the day. Their argument; What good is being able to curl a dumbbell 100 times if you can’t walk your groceries home? It’s something I whole heartedly agree with and have been trying to work towards for some time now. I’d previously been doing it through more intense training, but once I saw crossfit, everything changed.

Crossfit, gym jones and others, helped redefine what fitness is. Pull ups are coming to the fore, along with Olympic lifts such as the clean and jerk, sending isolation exercises like the tricep extension to the bodybuilders. I remember reading one person’s description of why they moved on to functional fitness. They said ‘what good is having a perfect physique if you can’t haul yourself up onto your roof when your house is on fire”.

The 300 did it. When Frank Millar’s story hit the big screen everyone wanted to know how those actors got those physiques. Gym jone’s was buzzing around every gym for the next few weeks. The 300 workout is mentioned in most magazines as one of the most gruelling things a weight lifter can attempt. And yet, the change still isn’t complete. Weight lifters have been shown the light, they’ve simply turned away from it. Why?

My belief stems from my experience. It’s taken me a long time to fully embrace Crossfit’s program (my chosen path). I avoided it because I wanted to get into shape first. The ridiculousness of that statement didnt’ escape me at the time either. The truth was that I didn’t want to embarrass myself. I may not have been a heavy lifter but at least with my traditional approach I was in the same boat as everyone else. As soon as I start doing speed super sets of Cleans and pullups I’ll be the oddity in the gym, and that’ll attract attention. I knew I didn’t want that attention until I could do the lifts without throwing up.
